- Surfing: Jordy Smith produces a series of high-scoring aerial moves to win his round three heat over local favourite Brett Simpson (USA) in the Hurley Pro, Lower Trestles, California event. Smith went head-to-head with Simpson with both surfers impressing before Smith sealed it on the final wave of the heat, posting an increidible 9.60 score (out of ten) to advance into round four. Smith was eventually beaten by Bede Durbridge in the quarter finals. The Hurley Pro featured the newly decided world’s top 34 surfers who competed in the ASP's new 36-man format for the first time ever.
