Cool Style meets Red-Hot Blades - German Premiere for Red Bull Crashed Ice in Munich
Built for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games, the Olympiapark, with its many shrubs, trees, hills, and water features, it is a magnet for both locals and tourists from all over the world. Today it has established itself as the location for major sports events. In 2010 the park will set another milestone and add further name to its long list of famous guests: the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship is to touch down on German soil for the first time! An expected 30,000 spectators and 100 athletes racing through razor-sharp turns will create an ice-melting atmosphere in the mid-January cold of Munich.
350 metres in length, 35 metres high, and speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour – Munich’s Red Bull Crashed Ice course is definitely not for ice princesses. Beginning on a scaffolding tower some 12 metres above the stadium’s stands, the serpentine ice run with banked turns, challenging curves, and fearsome obstacles drops all the way down to the park’s Olympic Lake. The main challenge for the athletes will be the banked curve, where participants will have to try to keep their speed up, while the turning point of the course – in the true sense of the word – is an open stretch of ice with a pylon at the end that can be circled from either side. Here, it is all about being smart and showing tactical awareness to leave the competition behind you. When red-hot blades meet cool style it can only mean one thing: Crashed Ice!
