- About
- The Formula One World Championship arrives in Spain for the fifth race of the season and takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya. Interestingly the circuit is often referred to as 'Barcelona', despite being located in Montmelo, and should not be confused with the Montjuic circuit, which is actually in the city of Barcelona and hosted the Spanish Grand Prix four times between the years of 1969 and 1975. There has been open criticism of the circuit in recent years, owing largely to the fact that so much testing goes on here, allowing Formula One drivers and mechanics to become extremely familiar with the track, reducing the amount on on-track action. In its heyday overtaking was the norm, cars could follow closely through the last two corners and then slipstream down the long straight. However, as aerodynamic balance became more critical this disappeared, and the cars were unable to follow each other closely due to turbulence created by the leading car. Circuit de Catalunya has played host to a number of very memorable moments down the years; in 1991 Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell went down the entire front straight side-by-side while dueling for second place, with Mansell eventually taking the position and the race itself. In 1994, Michael Schumacher managed to finish in second place despite driving over half the race with only fifth gear. Two years later, in 1996 Schumacher again made headlines taking his first win as a member of Ferrari during a torrential rainstorm. At the 2006 Spanish Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first Spanish Formula One driver to win in his home country. In 2008 Heikki Kovalainen left the track at 240kph (149mph) after a wheel rim failure at turn nine. He managed to decelerate to 130kph (81mph) when he hit the tyre barrier. He was temporarily unconscious and had minor concussion but a few minutes later spectators were relieved when he gave a thumbs-up.
