Zim Dollar Dollar Bill Y'all!

“Electro” is truly an overused term. Who doesn’t claim to be an Electro Producer and DJ these days? To say a piece of music is an Electro track means nothing, it could mean it’s a piece of dark-brooding, post-punk, 80’s excursion, or the latest David Guetta doef-doef hit.

But really it’s the term that I still associate the strongest with the movement pioneered by labels like DFA, Ed Banger, Kitsune and Modular. The sounds of LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax. And although that sound has morphed into the hair-raising, headbanging techno of the Bloody Beetroots and Skrillex, sometimes losing its classic disco punk sexiness along the way, the sound of ‘real’ Electro, if I can put it like that, is still very much alive.

And very much alive in South Africa. Popularized down here by the likes of Haezer, I present the newest born monster in the South African Electro family, Zim Dollar Bill. Their sound is a marriage of the aforementioned Beetroots and the newer sounds of Afrotech. These guys have spent much of their time at the Red Bull Studio pounding the Moog Little Phatty synth through a side-chain compressor. Listen to the results below:
