Street dance documentary and winner of best South African Documentary Audience Award at this year’s Encounters, The African Cypher, will be showing at the Durban International Film Festival this coming week. The film features the best of Red Bull Beat Battle 2011 crews and is definitely not to be missed.
About The African Cypher:
Street dance in South African townships is about far more than just performance to the crews of Mamelodi and the Cape Flats. The dance scene is a tangle of styles, cultures, languages and lifestyles. Isipantsula, Krump, B-Boying and Sbhujwa is a means of survival for these young people, many of whom come from a background of poverty and crime, and their art is about putting their bodies to use in constructive ways. The African Cypher is an extravaganza of spirited dance and electrifying music, as we watch them move, laugh and wax lyrical about the thing they love most.
