With the waves not rising to the occasion at the Billabong Pro in Teahupoo, the surfers on the ASP World Tour have been left to their own devices on the Pacific island of Tahiti. It’s a tough life, eh?
One person who knows all about Tahiti’s best breaks – and the best places to take a break – is islander Michel Bourez.
The Spartan led an expedition to take Red Bull Surfing coach Andy King and a few friends to some of the island’s best spots.
Heading to the east coast, they spent the morning surfing a few beach breaks before heading to lunch and a plate of mahi mahi so fresh, it was still swimming.
But Bourez is aware that all this is just the appetiser for what should be one of the highlights of his season. "Teahupoo is the one I wait for all year. To be able to surf at home and represent Tahiti is a great honour for me.
"I really hope that I do well and that we’ll get the right conditions to have a competition worthy of the beautiful island."
In fact, Bourez has spent the last two weeks on the island getting himself ready for the contest. "Before each round I try to put myself in a bubble for I can fully focus on my preparation.
"As it’s my home event, I have the advantage of knowing the wave well so I can choose the best boards for the competition. But while I might dream of reaching the final, I know I still have a long way to go so I’m staying realistic and taking each event as it comes."
