Spit Munky were the first group to be featured on the Red Bull Music Studio blog. They produced a four track EP in the studio over a year ago and it was dope to have them back, partly because they’re such off-the-wall guys, but mainly because they make sick electronica influenced rap music, sometimes referred to as ‘hiptronica’, but probably best known as ‘glitch-hop’.
This track is however, straight underground hip-hop to me. It reminds me of the kind of production by the likes of the RZA from the Wu Tang or El P during Company Flow’s heyday. You know those off-the-chain beats where you holla out loud, “What is that sound he’s sampled? I never would have thought that would have worked in a beat, but it sounds ill, yo!”
Anyways I’ll hand over the proverbial mic, so to speak, to Spit Munky main man, Ewok who has this to say about the track:
“TOOTHLESS, a collaboration between MCs Creamy Ewok Baggends (Illuminating Shadows/Spitmunky out of Durban), Sammy Sparks and Garlik Brown. Over a beat from DJ Veranda Panda, the audio cat behind the SPITMUNKY sound, engineered by Mike Sims at the Redbull Studios Cape Town, these three lyricists got down on a day of rhyme writing and reciting around the idea of a lack of originality that is evident amongst young rappers in South Africa. Without trying to preach before teaching, the theme manifested in a warning about losing identity and being discovered as fake by the ears of the underground. The track attempts to let each vocalist sit in their comfortable space of authenticity without asking them to step into any pre-set notions of what Hip Hop music has to sound like. The writing/rhyming style and original flavour of each rapper on the track is highlighted by the reworking of the TOOTHLESS chorus.
SAMMY SPARKS is well known for his freestyle and battle skill, a talent that recently earned him the title of KING OF HIP HOP in the Rap category in DA CAPE vs. DA REST Battle 2009. Long time collaborator GARLIK BROWN is also no small fish when it comes to original sounds from the Mother City. Together, “Vulga Tongue and Grammasta Fungus” as the duo are known, represent a consistent focus on authenticity in creativity.
The two met up with EWOK and VERANDA PANDA during a week of SPITMUNKY studio sessioning at RedBull Studios Cape Town where the crew were completing work on their debut album.
TOOTHLESS represents a cross-country collaboration of like minded musicians focussed on longevity through authenticity. Once again RedBull Studios plays host to a serious studio collabo between diverse musical heads from SA.”
