New ASP world rankings leader Jordy Smith will be looking to continue his recent run of form as the O’Neill Coldwater Classic returns to Cape Town, South Africa.

The South African won his first ASP elite title – the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay – in his home town of Durban last weekend, and now turns his attention to the wildest leg of the CWC series. Last year’s event was the first elite surfing competition to be held in the city for 25 years, and Smith clearly enjoyed himself.

“It was such a great competition to have in Cape Town last year” the 22-year-old said. “The waves there are pretty wild, and the location is amazing. It is something so different and special to have in my home country.”

The CWC has already taken in its most southerly and northerly stops in Tasmania, Australia and Turso, Scotland respectively. Cape Town, with its massive swells and storms now offers the surfers their wildest challenge.

The 4 Star ASP competition certainly lived up to its billing last year as one of the bigest storms to hit Cape Town in the last 20 years did so during the event. And with it being held deeper into winter this year, surfers can expect much of the same if not more.

Among the surfers braving the conditions with Smith wil be fellow countryman Rudy Palmboom as well as 2010 CWC Scotland and Tasmania winners, Royden Bryson and Stuart Kennedy. The pair currently share the lead in the race for the $50,000 awarded the overall winner of the 2010 series.
