When I sat down with my athlete manager at the end of last year to discuss the upcoming year, he suggested that I visit the Red Bull Diagnostics and Training Center (DTC) in Salzburg, Austria. The Red Bull DTC is a technically advanced athlete training center that focuses on everything from psychology to fitness training to give athletes the edge over their competition.
So we decided that I should visit the DTC for a week, where we were going to get some tests done and see how we could make my training more efficient and improve on what I had lost during my injury last year. When I arrived in Austria with my coach we were excited and open to all the opportunities the center could offer me. I did a lot of different tests during the week and I was very happy with my results during my review with all the coaches.
I worked with a psychologist, physiotherapist and a strength coach. They all had positive feedback for me and were really professional in the way they worked with myself and the other athletes.
The week in Salzburg helped me prepare for my upcoming race in Manchester, but more importantly helped me with my training programme for the 2012 Olympics. I left Salzburg for Manchester, where I had my first race of the season.
When I got to Manchester, I was excited to be back racing and was hoping to put the techniques I had learnt at the DTC to the test. The track was pretty cool and the facility was awesome to race on. I finished 3rd and was very happy to kick-off the season on a good foot. The race was also a good chance for my coach to watch me ride and give me some advice on what I needed to work on.
I still need to work on a few things but I’m excited to be back at my base in California to keep working hard.
