On their debut in the competition, EC Red Bull Salzburg clinched the IIHF Continental Cup in the Super Final in France with a game to spare yesterday.
The Red Bulls had made sure their CC destiny was in their own hands with a handsome comeback victory over 2007 champions Yunost Minsk of Belarus, using their powerplays well and taking a 5–3 win after going 2–0 down early on in the match.
“You need to play well in every shift and you can't have too many penalties,” said Salzburg coach Pierre Pagé afterwards.
Then followed a 6–1 demolition of Sheffield Steelers in the second game, the British side seemingly unable to cope with the Salzburg attack.
“After the second period, they didn’t seem to have the energy to compete with us,” said the Red Bulls’ Daniel Selzer, who scored twice in the rout. “We were always one or two steps faster and they could only react with fouls.”
The hosts, Grenoble Brûleurs de Loups, were the only team able to challenge the Red Bulls for the title, but failed to beat Yunost Minsk in regulation time in their second game, meaning they failed to secure enough points. Sheffield Steelers’ loss to the Austrians means they cannot overhaul them whatever happens in their final match with Yunost this afternoon.
And so a first ever Continental Cup for Red Bull Salzburg is already assured ahead of their last game tonight against Brûleurs de Loups.
