Red Bulls Salute GEPA Pictures

In preparation for the pre-season spectacular that is Red Bulls Salute, we cast our eye over ice hockey's European Trophy and, in the process, puck (sorry, we mean pick) out a few figures you might need to know...

18 teams from seven European countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Austria) will compete in two divisions (Capital and Central) in August to decide who will contest the European Trophy.

This first round of competition will be staged from August 11-28, with matches played Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The final battle for the European Trophy which will feature the top eight teams from the two groups will take place from September 3-5 and be staged across two venues: Salzburg and Zell am See.

Sweden has more representatives in this year’s competition than any other country. The Red Bulls will meet the Frölunda Indians, the Malmö Redhawks and HV71 in the opening round. The Swedish Elite League is one of the strongest leagues in Europe but no Swedish team has yet lifted the European Trophy...

 

2005...

When EC Red Bull Salzburg invited teams to compete in an international pre-season tournament in 2005 a new competition was born. It's now an annual ice hockey event that attracts leading teams from around the world, with perhaps the most famous entrants being the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, who, in 2007, went on to win the trophy.

 

5-0...

ZSC Lions from Zurich, Switzerland, have already made three appearances at the Red Bulls Salute – more than any other team – and lifted the European Trophy in 2006. However their only meeting with the Red Bulls resulted in a 5-0 win for the hosts who went on to win the tournament for the first time in its history last year.
