Its round about that time on the global music calendar when musicians, DJs, singers, emcees, producers and other sonically creative minds, start getting into the right head-space to enter the Red Bull Music Academy.
The Red Bull Music Academy is an annual event that takes place in a different country in the world each year. Two teams of 25 musical minds get chosen from thousands of applicants from all over the world to come together for two weeks to take part in the Academy. In those two weeks, attendees of the Red Bull Music Academy attend lectures each day, headed up by top musical figures in the global industry, whether it be musos, record label owners or DJs, get to make music in one of several specially built studios filled with mad equipment and get to perform at some of the best venues in the country the Academy is being held in. Basically for those people who go, it’s the best two weeks of their life. You’re guaranteed to come back home a couple of head sizes too big.
This year things are shaking down a little different. For the past decade there has been an Academy every year. Kicking off in Berlin back in 1998, and moving round the world from Sao Paulo to Melbourne to Cape Town, the Academy has grown from strength to strength, disco to disco.
This time round the Academy team are taking a well-needed break from the musical roller-coaster that has been their lives for the past ten years to actually reflect on what has been achieved, and let me tell you there is a lot to reflect on. So the next Red Bull Music Academy is set to take place next year From February 7 to March 12, 2010. It’s all going down in good old London town, arguably the capital of night-club culture and the breeding ground of some of the most exciting new genres such as Dubstep, Funky (don’t ask if you don’t know) and some new genres that haven’t been invented yet but which will already be passé’ by the time the Academy actually takes place.
Nevertheless it doesn’t mean all applicants get to kick back and take a break. The application phase starts from May 11, 2009 so you all better start flexing those mind muscles because it takes some serious thought to fill in the form and make a super dope demo. Of course it’s totally worth it because if you get accepted, like so many SA music makers before, your life will be changed forever. In a good way of course, a very good way.
