The first match for Red Bull Brasil in the second division of the São Paulo state soccer championship took place in the rain.
Local supporters watched the team led by former striker Paulo Sérgio beat Sumaré Atlético by 2 goals to 0 at Vereador José Pereira stadium in Sumaré, São Paulo.
The goals of the Red Bull Brasil were scored by striker Fernandão and midfielder Thiago, both in the first half. The team also hit the goalposts twice.
The visiting team took the initiative from the outset. At the ninth minute, midfielder Guilherme took a chance from outside the area and goalkeeper Carlos Alberto defended well. In total command of the action, coach Paulo Sergio’s team created other chances, but only managed to get a goal at 36 minutes.
Best in the field, striker Fernandão dropped the bomb from outside the penalty area and hit the left corner, causing celebration for the Red Bull Brasil supporters.
Sumaré had no time to react: one minute later, full-back Fabinho made a great play from the right ending in a cross shot. Midfielder stormed in and shot the ball into the home team’s net. At the end of the first half, half-back Deyvis almost scored the third. After a corner kick from Thiago, he rose above the defenders and headed the ball to the goalpost.
In the second half, the best chance for Red Bull Brasil came from the feet of striker Fernandão. He made a good play from the left and kicked hard; the ball exploded on the crossbar of the Sumaré goal.
“The team was a little nervous, anxious, but we managed a well-deserved victory for what we did in the first half. We defended well for the whole game,” stated coach Paulo Sérgio.
Star of the game, Fernandão celebrated the victory but regretted the ball hitting the crossbar in the second half. “I was crossing my fingers, but it didn’t go in. The important thing is that we’ve made the first step in the competition. I have experience in the second division, and I know the championship is very difficult.”
