Give us your take on the SA dance scene by posting your comments, photos and videos on Red Bull Beat Battle Disqus, and you might end up in a movie. Red Bull is making a documentary on local street dance, and we want to hear from you.
South Africa has a range of styles heating up the dance floors, from the home-grown Pantsula and S’bhujwa, all the way to US inspired Hip Hop and Krump. It’s impossible to pick out one style that represents SA in its entirety, but all of them tell a part of the story.
From Kasi, to the Cape Flats, Durban beaches, and leafy northern suburbs, dance has become a voice and language that links anyone who hears the beat. Heads bopping, feet stomping, and screaming – everyone knows what the crews are saying on the dance floor. Red Bull Beat Battle is an extension of this street culture.
Eight crews with different styles have been chosen from across the country to share their skills, culminating in a dance-off on 19 November, at The Blue Room, Old Park Station, Johannesburg. The winner will be crowned the Red Bull Beat Battle champ.
With dance crews comes friendly rivalry, between the different provinces, cities and towns, as well as international vs. home-grown styles. We know what our crews think, so what are your thoughts on:
• The best dance style
• Which area code has the best talent – is it 011, 021 ……..
• Which crew is the best in their dance genre
• Can SA talent take on any crew out there on the international stage
• Which new styles are growing fast, and could they blow up like s’bhujwa, which wasn’t around a few years ago, but has already entrenched itself in dance culture
Have your say on RED BULL BEAT BATTLE DISQUS.
