“Street dance in South Africa is a complex, convoluted underworld that, like most sub-cultures, exists as a sum of its participants. Within each genre, be it iSbhujwa or Krump, everyone seems to know of each other or danced with a brother or a cousin. The rivalries and brotherhoods are entrenched, the judges always biased. In our townships, suburbs and cities exist groups of individuals who form part dance crew - part group therapy. For many of the dancers the situation in their communities is a struggle for hope, confidence and identity.”
