Red Bull Thre3Style is a DJ battle focused on not only technical skill but also the ability to turn the party out, keep feet on the floor and hands in the air. Competing DJ's have to play a minimum of three genres or styles of music in 15 minutes and the winner will be flown to Chicago to represent South Africa for the World Final.
They will be judged by a panel of experts who will look at criteria such as track-selection, technical skills, creativity but most importantly their ability to bring the house down.
Red Bull Thre3Style SA 2012 is going down at the Alex Theatre in Braamfontein, Jozi on the 23rd of June and there are, conincdentally, three judges for the night. Here's who they are and what they do:
Ready D

As one of South Africa’s most prolific DJs, turntablists and producers, having competed in the World DMC Championships twice, and an ever vital force in promoting and providing a platform for local talent through his many projects over the years such as his current show on Good Hope FM every Monday to Thursday, Ready D is probably the best person in SA to help decide who the local Red Bull Thre3Style champ will be.

Kid Fonque

Unique in his ability to merge a myriad of different influences into a style that is entirely his own, Johannesburg’s Kid Fonque (aka Allan Nicoll) is one of SA’s most reputable DJs. His monthly night at Kitchener’s, ‘#2sidesofthebeat’ coalesces all his influences, bringing together an eclectic array of international and local DJs. Working his way up from CD stores to label manager of independent powerhouse Soul Candi Records—it’s clear that music has never been a side project.

Richard the Third

Over the years Richard the Third (aka Richard Rumney) has made Hip-Hop beats for emcees such as Tumi Molekane, been a regular Electro DJ in both Jozi and Cape Town, produced Dubstep with his brother as Biscope and helped create Spoek Mathambo’s acclaimed album, ‘Mshini Wam’ as well as perform around the world in Spoek’s live band. By day he manages the Red Bull Studio Cape Town and is very much a part of the epicenter of Red Bull South Africa’s cultural and music projects.
