Red Bull Studio Cape Town

Little Kings of Skank

So this week we have Captain Stu in the studio. Before they set their gear up for their first session, I had a chance to quickly chat to the guys. What has become of interest to me of late, particularly coming back from watching the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash, is the reggae, dub, dancehall scene in Cape Town. Over the past few weeks we’ve had the likes of hip-hop-dancehall stalwart Crosby from Gugs and dub masters Seven Foot Sound System making some of the sickest, skanking music in the studio. And of course a while back we had the Little Kings, a ska reggae-rock band from the mother city, come and record a few songs.

Anyways the guys from Captain Stu reckon that the ska scene has died down a bit, but I reckon Cape Town is ripe at the moment with the variety of reggae-music offshoots like dancehall, dub and ska, and its exciting man.

So onto the Little Kings, I realise after reading about them that I saw them over a year ago at the Virgin V-Fest final thing at Carfax. I cant remember what that was all about actually, something to do with winning a gig at the festival which disasterously never happened, and I cant ever remember who won, but I do remember loving the Little Kings straight skanking sound.

Take a listen and download the track New World below. Its upbeat riffs and grooves coupled with the conscious lyrics of the song make it the perfect wake-up-and-face-the-world tune.
