It’s human nature to make heroes. Sometimes it’s justified, and sometimes it completely unjustified, but that’s what humanity does. We notice people who stand out slightly from the rest of the masses, and if we like what we notice, we help that person to rise even more. This gains momentum until eventually we have heroes.  Surfing is simply a microcosm of the same.

We find heroes, we make heroes and we discover people who are worthy of hero-worship. We have people like Mick Fanning. He is a former world champion. Worshiped as such by his country, Australia, and by the rest of the surfing fans. Mick is a likeable, friendly sort of guy. A genuine sort of person that makes friends, smiles, acts cool and loves surfing.

In South Africa we have Jordy Smith. A phenomenal talent, Jordy has risen through the ranks and is now a phenomenal talent and hero in his country as well. Jordy handles the fame and the attention like the real pro that he is, comfortable with the television cameras and equally at ease with a microphone in hand. Jordy has world champion written all over him, and there is no doubt much to come from the man.

Then there is Kolohe Andino. The man known as ‘Brother.’ Widely touted as the ‘next big thing’ or the man who is going to change surfing, Kolohe is a phenomenal surfer. Son of former professional surfer Dino Andino, Kolohe has it all. A beautiful surfing style, talent pouring out of him, and total confidence and control when the waves get serious, as well as every single new school trick in the book. Coming in at 24 at the end of the year, Kolohe is looking strong for his rookie year. There will be some big expectations and the world will be watching as he takes on the best in the world at their own game. He has what’s necessary except for the untested area – fierce competition at the highest level.

The man known as ‘Brother.’ Widely touted as the ‘next big thing’ or the man who is going to change surfing, Kolohe is a phenomenal surfer.

Some people call it Big Match Temperament, some people call it nerves or lack thereof, while other people just see surfers with different levels of hunger. It all becomes apparent when things start going down in the big leagues. Sponsors, including Red Bull, have invested heavily into Brother, and the reason is because he’s got it. He has the full package. He has the experience and the wherewithal to withstand fierce pressure, and he has the fortitude to bash it out head-to-head with the very best in the world. As mentioned earlier, the world is going to be watching, but Brother is going to stand up, make us proud and impress us all.

Kolohe has a long and exciting career ahead of him, and his first year on the World Tour is going to be a total breakthrough.
