For those who completely missed any news about Red Bull Soundclash in Durban, where Gazelle and Die Heuwels Fantasties slugged it out in a musical battle for sonic supremacy, it was the globetrotting, Afrotronic, super-group who took home the title.
Gazelle have actually been quiet for a while, I imagine because the lead singer, the illustrious Xander Farrera moved to New York this year to pursue his music and photography. This is not to say that the band, mainly comprised of the core duo of Xander and musical sidekick Nick Matthew, are out of the game. In fact being quiet can be good for a band locally because, as Gazelle did, when you come back people are hungry and eager to see you again after the hiatus.
Ashtray Electric, on the other hand, have been consistently building their musical base in South Africa four the past three to four years, garnering a solid fan base around the country having had regular radio and TV airtime and the winner of the MK Award 2009 for Best Newcomer.
The two bands collaborated a year ago on the track, 'Release' and although it took them time to complete it, the ever busy globe-trotting musos they all are, they sure completed it in style: An electric storm of layered vocals, guitars and synthesisers and the kind of dynamics between subtle and driving to full on wall of sound that demonstrate solid musicianship, its a top class piece of music that only bands of this calibre could pull off.
Whats more, to complete the package, they even made a music video for the track directed by Xander Ferreira & Misha Taylor. Watch and listen below.
