The British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Surfing Championship, held last weekend in Cornwall was a perfect platform for elite surfers to showcase their ability.

The event attracts more than 350 competitors, making it one of the largest surf events in the world. Students from as far as Aberdeen made the overnight trek down to Fistral Beach, Newquay to compete in the three-day event.

The first day of competition on Friday saw competitors greeted with two to three foot clean waves that were perfect for all abilities.

All surfers completed their first round heats in the men’s and ladies divisions and defending champion Gordon Fontaine led the charge cruising through the opening rounds.

Saturday saw a drop in swell size but this did not affect the high level of surfing. Spectators lined the beach supporting their fellow students, enjoying the sun and sand and as the heats progressed so did the level of surfing.

With only the final rounds left to complete, Sunday's competitors were in the water early and challenging conditions ensued with small waves on offer. This meant that the surfers had to bide their time and make it count when a decent set of waves came in.

Fontaine, of Bournemouth University, retained his title after fending off Billy Norways, Rob Webster–Blyth, and Jonathan Waugh in the men’s final, while Gwen Sperlock used her contest experience to select the best waves that were on offer to take the women’s title.

With competitors not only competing for individual but team points as well, every round counted. The eventual team that came out on top were defending champions Falmouth University in the men’s division, and newly crowned champions Exeter University in the women’s division.
