FIVE QUESTIONS WITH JEAN-MARC JOHANNES

DSC_4763.jpg

How long have you been scouting and sizing up that gap?

I have had my eye on it for quite some time as it is a road away from my house. I drive past it almost every day with the thought of doing it, walked up to it on numerous days just to look at it and envision myself clearing it.

Our photographer Craig Kolesky says the run-up and launch is a bit sketchie. Is that so? Did you get scared at all?

Yes, it was rather sketchie but we made it work. The one thing I was scared of was the launch ramp breaking from the speed I
got in the run up. Running at a high speed then jumping onto your board generates a lot of force into the launch ramp.

When you first landed it, did you then go, "Ok, let's go throw something big now"?

Yes. After the first land, I felt confident enough to pull out a big trick, one that is consistent and that I know I can take to any height.
Eventualy I landed. I then decided to do something that I have only landed a few times, I was not sure if i could take it across a big gap. Thankfully it all worked out.

And if you crashed?

I crashed hard a few times from the impact of the landing on the other side, but I really wanted it, as I was so close to landing that I could not let anything stop me. I had to fully commit to every attempt even if it meant crashing a few times, because the worst thing that could have happened is I end up inside the canal.

What's next?

The MAERSK shipping containers in Maitland, from one container to another.
