The towering Durban City Hall was the setting for the 4th and final regional qualifier that saw 18 freestyle footballers take to the mat in the last regional qualifier for the Red Bull Street Style competition in Durban today. Each of the contestants were vying for a spot at the National Final in Johannesburg on 14 June.

The crowd watched on in amazement as the group of freestyle footballers used their skill and footwork to show the judges why they should go through to the final. DJ Switch was at the mic keeping the crowd involved and excited while DJ Azhul was giving the contestants the beats they needed to perform.

Durban produced a talented group of young freestyle footballers and many of them have the potential to do great things in next year’s Red Bull Street Style.

Judges were also impressed with the turn out of young talent and had the difficult task of deciding on the finalists. After choosing the top 8, contestants went into the battle rounds where two contestants had to battle each other for 3 minutes.

The judges were legendary footballers Thabo Mngomeni, who captained Bafana Bafana from 1999 until 2002 and Shakes Kungwane, former midfielder for Bafana Bafana as well as Ryan Wilkisky from soccer magazine Kick Off. They were looking for creativity, ball control and flair and were given just that.

After the final rounds, the decision was made that 2 finalists, Sbusiso Ndlovu from Pietermaritzburg and Philane Gumede from Durban, would go through to the National Final where 16 of the best freestyle footballers from across the country will compete for the chance to represent South Africa at the Red Bull Street Style World Final in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Tickets for the National Final are now on sale at Computicket. Tickets cost R50 and seating is limited so get your tickets early.
