Red Bull Studio Cape Town - Inside the Studio

Black Porcelain

Carol Mshinga goes under the name Black Porcelain when in musical guise and is steadily making a name for herself as a singer and composer in the small but rich and fertile local soul music scene. In particular she has, with the help of young and precociously gifted producer Oltak, produced a selection of tracks at the Red Bull Studio that falls into a progressive genre one could call future soul, where the traditional framework of rhythm and blues is maintained but the overall sound is a tapestry of modern electronica and dance music. In short its straight, good old R&B fired through the prism of drum-machine and synthesiser sonics.

Carol is a radio DJ when not a musician, so her roots are permanently soaked in the deep waters of music. Her debut self-released EP, "Green", drew from all her influences collectively and had a very 'live' sound overall. The tracks recorded and produced at the studio are going to be included on her second album, and if they're indication, the sound will surely be a step in a different direction to 'Green'.

Oltak, briefly mentioned on the RADAR pages before, has seemingly come out of nowhere over the past year. His musical mind, nourished by the sounds of Fying Lotus and his Brainfeeder label, has seen him become quite the sought after producer.

So take a listen and download to the songs, "A Clown's Joy" and "Neckflexion" below. They're soaked wet in electric liquid soul.
